AYJNIHH, Mumbai invites proposals from all agencies (NGOs/GOs) working in the area of Hearing Impairment for services and/or research based projects that need funding from AYJNIHH for the year 2009-10. Please ensure that the proposal includes all details pertaining to budget. National Workshop on Comprehensive Rehabilitation of Persons with Hearing
Impairment
As a part of Short Term Training Activities NIHH conducts Regional and National Meet for NGOs and Govt. organizations working in the field of hearing disability. The prime objective of such meet is to exchange information on the latest trends in the field of rehabilitation of persons with hearing impairment and provide a platform to NGOs and agencies to share the best practices and the issues confronted by them in providing services to the persons with disabilities.
The National workshop on "Comprehensive Rehabilitation of Persons with Hearing Impairment" was conducted on 26th and 27th Feb., 2010 at Pallotine Animation Centre, Pallotti Nagar, Nagpur. Recommendations of the Workshop are made available on link - Recommendations of the Workshop

India visited AYJNIHH, Mumbai on 11.01.2010VISIT OF SHRI MUKUL WASNIK, HONOURABLE MINISTER OF SOCIAL
JUSTICE & EMPOWERMENT, GOVT. OF INDIA, NEW DELHI
The Hon'ble Minister was received at the foyer by the
Director and faculty and welcomed with bouquets by young children with hearing
impairment from different clinical programmes of AYJNIHH.
The Heads of Departments and senior officials of the
Institute gathered at the Committee room to be introduced to the Hon. Minister.
A Power Point presentation portraying the current status of persons with hearing impairment as well as highlighting the
activities & achievements of the Institute was made.
During his address the Hon. Minister indicated the need to
define clearly the mission, mandate
& goals for upgradation of the Institute. In this connection a brief write up on Central Universities for
Rehabilitation Sciences along with draft version of Institutes for Disability
Rehabilitation Bill (2009) were also submitted to him.
The Hon. Minister expressed deep concern about acute
shortage of Sign Language Interpreters and suggested that efforts be initiated
to increase the availability of interpreters. He opined that in all major
functions such as those involving National Awards, Arjun Awards, etc., the
facility of Sign Language interpretation should be provided. He also
said that the Ministry of Information
& Broadcasting is planning to create a window for sign Language in the daily
newscast on TV.
With regard to the proposal for construction of buildings,
the Hon. Minister mentioned that work at regional centers (particularly New
Delhi) and at Head quarters need to be attended to on priority basis. He also remarked that it is necessary to give suggestions to CPWD in the
context of UNCRPD requirements.
The Hon. Minister appreciated AYJNIHH for all its
initiatives, efforts and activities and assured that the Ministry would give all
support to take the momentum forward. Further,
with reference to the project on prevention of non-syndromic deafness in
Maharashtra, he assured that he would take up matter with Health Ministry for
further action.
Following this, the Minister visited the various Departments of the institute and was shown the various assessment facilities for clients of different age groups as well as the intervention programs for different aspects. The technological advances in terms instrumentation for hearing aid testing, video remote interpretation, cochlear implant programs, CCTV facility for supervision of students trainees, etc., were also demonstrated during the tour of the Hon. minister.

RECEIVES MANTHAN AWARD SOUTH ASIA 2009 FOR E-INCLUSION
Bridging the digital divide for development, Ali Yavar Jung National Institute
for the Hearing Handicapped, (AYJNIHH) Mumbai, received ‘Manthan Award South Asia 2009’
for E-Inclusion at
the Manthan Awards ceremony organized on 19th December’09 at the National
Cooperative Union Institute, New Delhi, by Ministry of Communication &
Information Technology, Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) and Nokia Siemens
Networks.
The award was given for ‘Online Hearing Screening’ (checkhearing.nic.in) a web based digital product of
AYJNIHH, Mumbai. This product was recognized as one of the best practices in
inclusion in the area of
facilitating empowerment of differently abled population through digital content
and medium. On behalf of the Institute, Shri P.J. Mathew Martin and Shri Rajeev
Jalvi received the award. Accepting the award at the award function, Shri
P.J.Mathew Martin dedicated the award to the users of the website
‘checkhearing.nic.in and to the hearing impaired population of India.
After giving away the awards and speaking at the award function the Chief
Guest, Honorable Mr. Sachin Pilot, Minister of State, Ministry of Communication
& Information Technology, stressed ‘the need to take the digital
technology development to the rural masses. Success of these digital
developments in India would be decided by its reach to the common man’ he
added.
The participants and nominees for the ‘Manthan Award’09 South Asia’
included best digital practices from other South Asian countries like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives,
Nepal, Srilanka and Pakistan. The event also witnessed the announcement
of a partnership between DEF and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which would offer awards for best rural communication practices among the Manthan nominees.

National Award for Placement
Mr. Prasenjit Majumdar, Social Welfare Officer, AYJNIHH, ERC, Kolkata, has been awarded by Govt. of India for Best Placement Officer. He got this National Award for his last five years performance in the area of placement of the persons with hearing impairment in different jobs. On 3rd December, 2008 he received the Award and cash prize of Rs.15000/- from the Vice President of India at New Delhi.

AYJNIHH receives "Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Award"
AYJNIHH receives "Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Award" in 'B' region for the year 2006-07 for outstanding performance in Hindi.
Hon. President of India, Smt. Pratibha Patil presented the award to Shri R. Rangasayee, Director, AYJNIHH, Mumbai on Hindi Day 14th Sept., 2008. The award was received by the Director in a function organized by the Department of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairs at Plenary Hall in Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. AYJNHH stood at 3rd position for "Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Award" in 'B' region for the year 2006-07 for outstanding performance in Hindi language usage. This is the 1st time that National Institute under Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment receives such award of appreciation for implementation of Official Language, though the AYJNIHH had already received four National Awards for its work in the core area. The Director congratulates all the staff members of AYJNIHH for this unique achievement through their continuous efforts.
