    Universal design version of Indian National Anthem produced in its centenary year by AYJNIHH

    Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Indian National anthem on 27th December 1911, Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped in Mumbai, brought out a Universal design version of the Indian National anthem. This version of the Indian National anthem has features of Universal design, such as audio description for the Blind Persons, Indian Sign Language & Captions for the Deaf Persons. Captions are available in 14 Indian Language and English Language.


    Indian National anthem is the honor and pride of our country. Expression of patriotism with dignity is increased in this version of Indian National Anthem through accessibility format. The certification from censor board of film certification (CBFC) has been obtained for Universal & Educational viewing of this version of Indian National Anthem. Special Schools and organizations for the Deaf and Cinema theatres in the country could enable equal participation for all by screening this version of Indian National Anthem. It is also available DVD format at the Indian Sign Language Cell of the Institute. The same has been made available in the website of the institute using the YouTube.

    AYJNIHH launched Disability Information Line (DIL) for the State of Sikkim:

    The Disability Information Line (DIL) for the state of Sikkim was launched on 3rd December, 2011 on the occasion of World Disabled Day at STNM Hospital, Gangtok, Sikkim. Hon. Speaker, Sikkim Legislative Assembly, Shri K.T.Gyaltsen dedicated DIL for the people of Sikkim State.

Chief Minister & Chairman, Social Welfare Commission, Govt. of Sikkim, Miss Neru Seva, Hon’ble Minister for Industries & Excise Dept., Govt. of Sikkim, Mr. Aashok Gurung, Chairman, OBC Board, Govt. of Sikkim, Mr. Phetuk Tshering Bhutia, MLA, Sangha & Chairman ST Board, Govt. of Sikkim, Mr. Binod Rai MLA & Parliament Secretary, Social Justice and Empowerment and Welfare Department, Govt. of Sikkim, Mrs. Manita Pradhan, Chairman, Woman and Child Welfare Board, Govt. of Sikkim graced the occasion.

    Shri N. Karthikeyan, Information & Documentation Officer, AYJNIHH made a presentation on DIL on this occasion. Around 250 people participated in the launching function. Social Justice and Empowerment and Welfare Department, Govt. of Sikkim made elaborate arrangement for this launching function.

    AYJNIHH Bags Award in 'Abilityfest 2011'

    Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped, (AYJNIHH) Mumbai bagged the prestigious ‘60 Seconds to Fame’ at the 4th India International film festival ‘Abilityfest-2011’ held at Chennai on 14th Oct. The award was handed over by music maestro Shri A.R.Rahman at a function, during the grand finale of AbilityFest 2011. The four-day India International Disability Film Festival was hosted by Ability Foundation at Chennai. The award was given for the ‘National Anthem in Hindi with Indian Sign Language’ made by AYJNIHH on the theme of ‘breaking the barriers’.


    The film has been made by Professor R. Rangasayee, P.J. Mathew Martin, R.S. Swamy, Kinjal Shah, and Mohd. Shafique of AYJNIHH-Mumbai. The digital video film has audio description in English and closed captions in 16 Indian languages with application of the concept of universal design, so that everyone can participate in the National anthem.

    Among the total twenty finalists, from 150 entries from various parts of the world, National Anthem in Hindi with Indian Sign Language of AYJNIHH-Mumbai was awarded 2nd best film at the Abilityfest 2011. The jury of the Abilityfest 2011 comprised of renowned National Award-winning film historian Mr. P.K.Nair, festival director, Rohini, N.Venugopal and Angshu Jajodia. The award-winning films were picked from the 20 finalists based on the theme of breaking the barriers. The award consisted of a citation, certificate of appreciation and Rs.75,000/- cash award.

    AYJNIHH Staff Bags National Award for Universal Design

    A Media Professional from Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped (AYJNIHH) Mumbai received the prestigious National Award for Universal Design 'NCPEDP-MPHASIS Universal Design Award 2011'. The Award was handed over to Shri P.J. Mathew Martin on 14th August, 2011 at India International Centre, New Delhi by Shri M.K. Acharya, Secretary Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India, Shri Som Mittal, President NASSCOM, Shri Puneet Bhirani Vice President & Head Business Operations, Mphasis, during the award function. The national award is jointly given by National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) and MPHASIS.

    The award was in recognition of his efforts towards promoting accessible media. It is a tribute to honor those individuals who have been doing exemplary work in the field of promoting Accessibility and Universal Design. He created the AYJNIHH-NEWS in Universal Design. This 'Youtube' based News Channel implements the concept of Universal Design in the News Media. It has captions for the Deaf persons and Closed Captions in 61 languages using machine translation facility. He is also the course coordinator for the Post Graduate Diploma in Media & Disability Communication, at AYJNIHH, which is conducted in collaboration with Department of Communication & Journalism (DCJ), University of Mumbai. This award is given to him for the professional work for the cause of accessibility and Universal Design, in the areas such as built-in environment and use of information and communication technology (ICT).

    AYJNIHH BAGS AWARD IN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

    Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped, (AYJNIHH) Mumbai bagged the ‘Special Mention’ award at the 8th International ‘We Care Filmfest’ 2011. The award was handed over by Shri Sandeep Marwah, President of Asian Academy for Film and Television to Shri V.P Sah, Assistant Director, Eastern Regional Centre of AYJNIHH, during the award ceremony function on 4th May 2011 at India International Centre, New Delhi.

    Even though no film was found suitable for three awards in the one minute category, it was unanimously decided by the jury to make a special mention of an Indian film on the National Anthem in sign language. The film has been made by Professor R. Rangasayee, P.J. Mathew Martin, R.S. Swamy and Mohd. Shafique of the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped. The video film depicts the National Anthem in Hindi with Indian Sign Language. It has audio description in English and Captions in 16 languages. Efforts were made to make this video-film in Universal Design.

    Total twelve films, including one from the United Kingdom and an Indian film on the National Anthem in Indian Sign Language of AYJNIHH-Mumbai received awards in four categories-one minute, five minutes, 30 minutes and 60 minutes. The awards were presented on 4th May to commemorate the day on which United Nations approved the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and UNCRPD came into effect. The jury of the We Care Film Festival 2011 comprised of renowned National Award-winning film historian Shri Gautam Kaul, National Award Winning Critic Shri Utpal Borpujari, P7 News Channel Associate Executive Producer Shri Anurag Punetha, Outlook Assistant Editor, Ms. Geetashree and Eminent Film critic, Shri B.B. Nagpal.

    The award-winning films were picked from the 21 shortlisted films based on the viewers’ reactions at various screenings held over past 5 months at different venues. A total of 67 entries were received from various parts of the world. The award consisted of certificate of appreciation and Rs.10,000/- cash award.
